Digestive enzymes are incorporated into the digestive tract to break down food into its nutrient compounds. These can then be absorbed through the intestinal wall and into the blood. If this enzyme system is not working effectively, optimal health cannot be maintained because of poor absorption of the nutrients the body needs.
If food passes into the large intestine undigested, the bacteria present ferment it and consequently cause flatulence, bloating and diarrhoea. Natural plant enzymes have the advantage over animal enzymes that they are highly bioavailable and easily absorbed by the digestive tract.
