The use of artichoke in herbal medicine was first described in the 4th century BC. There is evidence of its use since the times of the Egyptian civilization for nutritional and therapeutic purposes. This plant belongs to the Asteraceae family, which also includes Milk Thistle. Also known as globe artichoke, this plant produces large purple and green flowers and is different from the Jerusalem artichoke, an edible root vegetable. Traditionally, artichoke extract has been used to relieve discomfort experienced by some people after meals. It is the leaves of the artichoke that contain the active components, the most important of which is cynarin. Cynarin and the flavonoids of the artichoke, including luteolin, are powerful antioxidants that represent the main benefits of artichokes. Artichoke extract standardized to 5% cynarin, which provides a relevant amount of 16 mg of cynarin per tablet. Directions for use: Take 1 to 2 tablets with a meal.
