Lactoferrin is a multifunctional body protein. Its name is derived from lacto, or milk, because this protein was first discovered in cow's milk. Ferrin refers to iron because lactoferrin has properties to bind and transport iron. Properties and benefits Lactoferrin is found in the nasal, respiratory, and gastrointestinal mucosa, tears, saliva, bile, pancreatic juice, urine, and mucus. A person receives a large amount of lactoferrin by drinking colostrum and breast milk immediately after birth. Although our bodies make their own lactoferrin, we never consume as high a dose of lactoferrin as we did early in life. In fact, a Western lifestyle that includes a diet rich in processed foods, high levels of (chronic) stress, and exposure to various (environmental) toxins and pathogens can negatively affect a person's lactoferrin stores. How to use lactoferrin? It is recommended to take 1 capsule once a day during or immediately after a meal. Do not exceed the recommended daily dosis.
