How can nipple shields help cracked or sore nipples?
Breastfeeding is a special moment, but it is not always easy. You may have sore or even cracked nipples, especially in the first few days when you and your baby are learning. After all, your sensitive nipples haven't yet gotten used to your baby's pressure and sucking during regular feedings. These discomforts should gradually subside. If not, seek the help of a lactation specialist or consultant. In the meantime, wearing nipple shields between feedings can help prevent clothing from rubbing against sensitive nipples.
How to solve the different types of problems that can occur in the nipples
Although sensitive or sore nipples are common in new mothers, sometimes the discomfort can be due to the position you adopt when you breastfeed or a poor latch on of the baby, so it is advisable to receive the help of a specialist or lactation consultant in these circumstances. If your nipples are bleeding, you experience significant pain when breastfeeding, or have symptoms of a breast infection, such as mastitis, it is important to see your healthcare professional.
How do nipple shields work?
Nipple shields are placed inside the bra to prevent the fabric from rubbing against sensitive or sore nipples, allowing your skin to heal. It is recommended to use a nursing bra with the nipple shields, since it usually has more space than a normal bra, which makes it easier to place the nipple shields inside. On the other hand, you don't have to worry about whether Medela Nipple Shells will show through your clothes, as their discreet shape ensures a natural look. Nipple shields can be worn continuously between feeds, but avoid wearing them to bed at night as this can exacerbate sore nipples.
How to use Medela nipple shields
Medela nipple shields have two parts: a soft, flexible silicone membrane that feels comfortable on sensitive skin, and an outer cup with ventilation holes that allows skin to breathe. These two pieces fit together easily:
Place the membrane over the outer cup, making sure it is snug around it. Place the assembled nipple shield inside the bra, with the opening of the membrane centered over the nipple. The holes should face up.
The nipple shields may collect some breast milk during use. You should not feed your baby with that milk. Discard it when you clean the protectors (see below).
Cleaning the nipple shields
In the same way that it happens with the rest of lactation accessories, hygiene is important. Before using your nipple shields for the first time, and once a day thereafter, disinfect them by following these quick and easy steps:
Place the separated pieces of the nipple shields in a small saucepan of cold water. The most recommended option is to use distilled water, but if you use tap water, you can add a teaspoon of citric acid to prevent the formation of lime deposits. Boil the water for five minutes. Carefully remove the water and allow the pieces of the nipple shields to dry on a clean cloth. You can also use a Medela Quick Clean™ microwave bag.
You should also clean the nipple shields after each use. Separate the pieces and wash them with a mild detergent. Then rinse them well in cold water and let them dry on a clean cloth.
